Covering an area of 5.7 square kilometers and located at the eastern foot of Cangshan Mountain and the north suburban of the Ancient City of Dali, the magnificent Chongseng Temple and Three Pagodas are the landmarks of Dali City.
Firstly established in the Kaiyuan Reign of the Tang Dynasty and flourished in the Song Dynasty, Chongseng Temple is renowned in the world for the Three Pagodas, Jianji Bell, Yutong Avalokitesvara Statue, and the Gold Statues of the Three Saints.
It is the famous imperial temple of the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdom had cloistered into Buddhist cultivation. One thing that get my attention is the Arhats Hall where 500 Arhats average 1.8 meters made of copper and coated with gold with different facial expressions, showing a unique and skillful technique.
The Three Pagodas of the Chongseng Temple are made of one big pagoda standing in the middle and two small ones to its two sides, making a triangle structure.
The main pagoda named Qianxun pagoda, 69.13 meters high built in Quangfengyou period (825-859 AD) of Nanzhao kingdom. The other two pagodas built in Dali Kingdom, one to the north and the other to the south of the main pagoda at 42.19 meters high. it is a huge area so make sure you have plenty of time to truly explore and enjoy the fantastic view of Erhai lake and mountain scenery. Happy traveling.
