Magnificent Takayama is also often referred to as Hida-Takayama, a city in the mountainous Hida region of Gifu prefecture. It preserves a traditional touch like few other Japanese cities, particularly in its beautifully preserved old town.
The narrow streets of its Sanmachi Suji historic district are lined with wooden merchants’ houses, shops, sake breweries, and cafes dating to the Edo period.
Takayama JR train station is strategically located. The city is so small that it’s best explored on foot. You can literally reach most of the sights on my things to do in Takayama page within 30 minutes or so by walking from the Takayama JR train station.
Make sure to include Takayama when you plan your Japan travel and you’ll love it!
