“Little Edo” Kawagoe

If you happen to be in Tokyo area and have one free day, travel back in time with a Tokyo day trip to “Little Edo” Kawagoe (川越市 Kawagoe-shi). The people of Kawagoe have preserved their city for all people today to experience the old castle town of Edo period (17th to the 19th centuries). Kawagoe is located in Saitama Prefecture; a 30-minute train ride from Ikebukuro, Tokyo. Another specialty of Kawagoe is Kashiya-yokocho, a confectionary lane. It is a five-minute walk from the Fudanotsuji bus stop. Small shops selling Japanese candies, sweet potato cakes, rice crackers, and other snacks stand in a row on both sides of the stone-paved lane. Make sure you try the sweet potato ice cream. Their simple, nostalgic taste will satisfy both your tongue and heart. You can easily walk around in Kawagoe to get the feel of Little Edo. Happy traveling!
