Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle, Japan’s preeminent wooden structure is a building of unparalleled beauty. Seen from the outside, the main keep appears to have five stories but the interior reveals a 7-floored structure with 6 floors above and one in the basement. Admission is 1000 Yen for adult and 300 Yen for child. Himeji Castle is open daily except Dec 29th and 30th.

Himeji is easily accessible from Kyoto or Osaka which makes it a fantastic day trip to consider.

Getting to Himeji Castle from Kyoto. If you have the JR pass, the journey will take approximately 55 minutes with Hikari shinkansen and about 90 minutes with local train such as JR Special Rapid Train Shin-kaisoku.

From Osaka you can travel with shinkansen Hikari, Kodama, or Sakura with JR pass and the journey takes approximately 30-40 minutes. Using local train can take about one hour.

Once in Himeji station, you have to exit the north side of the station and walk about 1 km to the castle.

The visit can easily take 2 to 4 hours depending on the crowds and your speed.
